Lessening one’s karmic retribution(true story)

James Yeo just back from NZ and going back NZ in 2 weeks . I glad that i got a chance to meet him

and listen to his true story..

Attending the SGI-NZ Victory Over Violence training course in Dunedin is an unforgettable and life-changing experience for me. On 8th May 2009 - a day before the training course, Stephen, Barbara, Christine and I were halfway through our five-hour drive from Christchurch to Dunedin, before we were involved in a major car accident at Moeraki. A car from the opposite direction was trying to overtake another car and had a head-on collision with us when both our cars collided at the peak of a gentle hill just after dark. Due to the huge impact from the crash, our car was thrown way into the bush. The four of us kept chanting and chanting out loud at that very critical situation, encouraging each other that we must be protected and unharmed no matter what! Stephen (the driver) suffered a broken elbow and ankle, while three of us suffered minor injuries. The firemen, policemen, St. Johns, victim support volunteers and the car-tower all said that we were very lucky and noone could have survived such a terrifying crash after looking at the terribly damaged car. We were all so protected by shoten-zenjin and truly felt the power of Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo being manifested at that very critical moment!

The Daishonin wrote this after he was nearly executed at Tatsunokuchi: “If one’s heavy karma from the past is not expiated within this lifetime, one must undergo the sufferings of hell in the future, but if one experiences extreme hardship in this life [because of the Lotus Sutra], the sufferings of hell will vanish instantly.” (WND-1-199)

In the hospital that night, I had a realization that this, instead of a sad tragedy, is a great opportunity to changing one’s life karma. Nothing we put into our practice of Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism is ever wasted! Also I felt the great significance of the three aims of the VOV, which are:

1) I will value my own life  2) I will respect all life  3) I will inspire hope in others  (www.vov.com)

I truly appreciate and was moved by all the wonderful SGI members who sent us daimoku immediately upon hearing our shocking news. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for everyone’s precious support, daimoku and encouragements! And I felt deep appreciation to President Ikeda for always encouraging us to grow, to study and to experience the beauty and struggle of life in this ‘one-of-a-kind’ organization called the SGI. That night after the whole incident, I vowed to keep advancing alongside my mentor no matter what, to strengthen my practice and to challenge whatever hardships I may face in life with joy and appreciation. The following day, three of us attended the VOV training course while Stephen had to prepare for an operation in Dunedin Hospital. But all four of us have undoubtedly won a truly victorious battle in our lives.
